History

HSM no 675 later NS 3305, Builder's photo Werkspoor 1912.

The 3300 was a 15 strong class of goods steam locomotives ordered by the HSM (Dutch Iron Railway Company) and built in three batches between 1912 and 1915. Numbered 671-685

Following the basic design of the earlier 601-647 with a 0-6-0 arrangement dating from 1895-1907, the HSM ordered fifteen similar locomotives at Werkspoor but now superheated. This was the first class of freight locomotives of the HSM to have such a novelty. After the merger into NS the class was numbered 3301-3315 in 1921. Around 1920 they were provided with a feedwater pre-heater on the left side of the boiler.

The class spent most of its working life in the Rotterdam Fijenoord depot. They were nicknamed "elephants"The engines performed well.

The same loco in NS guise. No 3305 in Roosendaal, around 1930.

During WWII eight engines were sent to Germany of which 3311 never returned. The loco was removed from the books in 1950 and was scrapped in the Russian military zone in 1951. Three engines were scrapped in 1947 due to extensive war damage. The remaining examples were withdrawn between 1947 and 1952 and scrapped before 1954. None made it into preservation.
